Background:

Dhaka is one of the busiest cities that serves as the center of political, economic and cultural life in Bangladesh. Dhaka has one of the largest population densities in the world with the continuation of urban expansion. The existing urban transport system has failed to adapt the city development and the rapid population growth. Therefore, extreme traffic congestion has become a normal state in Dhaka, wasting time and affecting the comfort of millions. To minimize the traffic congestion, it is planned to adopt mass rail transit (MRT), Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system, railway and other modern means of transport to relieve urban traffic.

Project Scope: 24 stations -- 11 of which will have interchange facilities with the metro rail, dedicated bus services, and Sadarghat launch terminal. The proposed route is Bishwa Ijtema Ground-Uttara-Dhaka Zoo-Gabtoli- Mohammadpur-Sadarghat-Postagola-Fatullah-Chashara-Adamjee-Demra-Trimohoni-Purbachal-Tongi.
Objective:
  1. To facilitate/ensure communication of daily Dhaka bound population of peripheral district of Dhaka megacity.ie. Gazipur, Manikganj, Munshiganj, Narayanganj, Narshingdi and Tangail.
  2. To keep traffic congestion of Dhaka Urban Megacity in control.
  3. To ensure urbanization of newly developing planning area like Gazipur, Savar, Babu Bazar, Shyampur, Jhilmil, Narayanganuj, Demra and Purbachal.
  4. To ensure social equity and economic Development of Dhaka and its nearest area.
